In humanities, we have been learning the difference between facts and opinions.
In PSHE we have continued our focus on ‘wellbeing’ and learned different breathing techniques we can use to help us feel calm and in control.

We also looked in detail at the character of Lila and made inferences about her personality. We then went on to look at the features of a letter in preparation for writing informal letters next week.
In Maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000.
In Humanities, we have looked at what life was like for sailors on the explorers’ ships of the 15th century and in science, we made string telephones and discussed how sound can travel through solids.
In Art we painted the colour wheel, using primary colours to mix secondary and tertiary colours.
In PSHE, we have discussed our rights as children, the difference between a ‘right’ and a ‘want’ and how, with every right, there comes a responsibility.

In Science, we have learned about solids, liquids and gases and how these affect the speed of sound. We used our bodies to represent the particles of a solid, liquid and gas.
In Humanities, we have learned about the reasons that Europeans wanted to travel to ‘The East’ and we used atlases to help us understand why a sea route was so important.
In Art we have learned how to self and peer assess using constructive language and in PSHE, we have thought about our emotions, focusing on ‘worry’.
The Language for Learning team would like to welcome you back to the new school year.
We are looking forward to supporting your children’s language learning this term. We have several groups taking place this term to support children with language acquisition which included: Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing and Vocabulary. Should your child be invited to a small group intervention you will be notified via the Primary Office.
Alongside small, regular groups, in some year groups the team will be supporting children with their curriculum for a unit of work or specific activity. This work will usually be completed in class, however sometimes work may lend itself to being completed out of the classroom, in order to support further with a specific language focus.
We also have a website with Tips and Tricks for you and your children to use at home. Click here for the Language for Learning website.
Should you have any questions about the support your child is being offered please do contact the Language for Learning team.

Maths - Your child has been given a sheet of squared paper with this week’s maths questions attached to it. This is to give them an opportunity to practise their mental arithmetic..
English - Your child has been asked to learn a poem and perform it. There are some poems related to ‘sound’ in the activity. They can choose one of these, or any other poem that they like. Your child can either record themselves and post a video on the classroom OR they can perform it to the class next week.
OPTIONAL - If your child is interested in becoming a Class Representative for their class, then they need to prepare a short presentation about why they would make a good candidate. Elections will take place on Monday 22nd September in all three classes.

Welcome to Week 3! A nice short week after the long weekend!
In maths, we are learning about number lines and the importance of knowing the value of each interval on the line. On Monday, we went to the Main Hall to create a human number line with the children organising themselves into ascending and descending order in their class and also their houses. We have also learned how to read and write Roman Numerals.

Welcome to Week 2 of Year 4!
To start our Humanities topic, we had a ‘Hook Day’ where the children went on a treasure hunt around the school to find artefacts linking to our theme. At each of the stops, they had to solve a riddle which gave them one of the nine letters of our first topic: Explorers!
In science, we had fun trying to identify a variety of noises to introduce our first topic, sound.
In maths, we have started our unit on place value. The children had lots of fun counting pasta and making groups of ten repeatedly to deepen their understanding of our number system.
In English, we have started with revising four of the word types: nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. The children have identified these word groups in extracts from ‘The Wild Robot’, discussed the purpose of each type and used them to write descriptive sentences.
In art, we have started to learn sketching techniques and in PSHE we have been learning about ‘belonging’.
Reading - Please read for 20 minutes per day and record this in your P.O. Please record the book title and page numbers and ask an adult to sign.
Maths - Please log in to TTRS and spend up to 10minutes each day to earn points for your class team!
Thank you to all of our parents that came to our Meet & Greet session on Monday. We will share the slides with you. If you have any questions at this stage, please email the primary office.

Welcome back to all our returning families, and a warm welcome to all of the new families joining us at BSM! We have had a lovely week getting to know the children, and we have been impressed by how quickly they have settled into new spaces and new routines.
This week our focus has been on settling into a new year, learning new routines and learning about each other.
We have completed lots of ‘getting to know you’ activities and have focused on our learning attitudes and thinking skills; these form the foundations of BSM’s ethos.
In preparation for the Year 4 children bringing their own device to school, we have been learning how to stay safe when using technology and have discussed what personal information is not safe to share when working online.
Reading Books:
Your child will receive one reading book at a time. When they have finished the book, they can return it and choose a new one.
Over the next few weeks, as we assess all of the children’s reading, their reading colour band may change. Your child should read this levelled reading book every afternoon and we ask you to record your child’s daily reading in their PO, including the book title, pages read and a signature.
Please keep books in your child’s school bag, so that we can read with them in school.
Homework will be set on a Sunday and will be due the following Sunday. Homework will be set through Google Classroom. Please join your child’s Google Classroom, either by using this code or by clicking on the invitation email they will receive. Please let us know if you have any problems with gaining access.

Our Year 4 Meet & Greet will be held on Monday 1st September, starting in the Oryx Theatre at 4.10pm and then moving to the Year 4 classrooms.
Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on PE days (Monday and Wednesday) and they will need to bring their school uniform, including shoes, to change into after the PE lessons. Please ensure they bring their uniform in a separate bag that they can carry to the changing rooms.
On swimming days (Sunday) they should wear their school uniform to school - not PE kit as they did in Year 3.
Their timetables have been stuck in their Personal Organisers and can also be found on the Google classrooms.
Please make sure all uniform, PE kit and swimming items are clearly labelled with your child's name.
Your child needs to bring a reusable water bottle to school every day.
Please check that the school has up to date information on any medical or dietary requirements. We will be cooking in some of our lessons and we want to make sure that we accommodate everyone's needs.
