Monday 15 December - KS2 Festive Concert in Oryx
Thursday, 18th December 2025 - End of Term 1
Finally the long awaited Year 6 chocolate sale has arrived. We are so proud of the way the children have embraced this challenge and have made such a big effort to ensure that their products are plastic free and sustainable. We have been putting the final touches into looking at ways to wrap products and creating our posters for the big day. The sale will take place on Thursday. Children should bring their chocolates into school on Thursday morning in a named cooler box and drop them off at the main Junior Hall before arriving at their classrooms. The sale will take place during the school day and children from all classes will be visiting the hall to buy these amazing chocolates. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to charity.

Spelling - No spelling homework this week due to the chocolate project
Maths - TTRS year 6 battle
We’ve had a lovely and engaging week in Year 6, filled with hands-on learning, creative exploration and thoughtful discussions across all areas of the curriculum. Here’s a look at what we’ve been working on:
In Humanities this week, students explored the fascinating journey of chocolate from bean to bar. We delved into how cocoa is grown, harvested and transformed into the chocolate we enjoy. Our discussions focused on ethics and sustainability, particularly the role of Fair Trade in ensuring farmers receive a fair wage and work in safe conditions. The highlight of the week was experimenting with melting chocolate and looking at different flavours and textures that may appeal to the consumer. The room smelt delicious!
In Maths, we wrapped up our unit on fractions with some challenging but rewarding work on adding and subtracting mixed number fractions. Students applied different strategies such as converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers and practised explaining their mathematical thinking clearly.
We’ve begun exploring our new unit on poetry. To celebrate Oman National Day, the children are writing short poems inspired by the diverse landscape, people and wildlife of Oman. Over the coming weeks, students will analyse poetic devices, explore different forms of poetry and experiment with crafting their own poems.
Our Science lessons continued with our unit on light. This week, students investigated how shadows are formed, how they change in size, and what this tells us about the behaviour of light.
Please click on this link for details about the project.
A slight change to homework is that both Maths and spellings will now be set on a Sunday - we hope this will make organisation a little easier for the children.
Reading is expected to be completed daily and all students have the opportunity to change their books regularly. PO’s should be completed and signed daily so that the children have a reading record.

Lost Property from camp:
There is still quite a lot of lost property collected after camp - this has been placed on tables outside 6B and 6D. So if items are missing please encourage your child to check there.
We are all getting back into our usual routines after our camp trip and staff training day last Thursday. Camp was fantastic and it was wonderful to see so many happy children getting involved in a variety of skills and activities and doing so with a smile and lots of encouragement for others. We were very proud of all of the children. We know you are all looking forward to seeing some photographs of your children on camp - we are currently busy downloading and collating these from the various school cameras and will share them as soon as they are ready.
In Science, This week has seen us starting a new and exciting topic of Light and Shadow. There will be lots of opportunities for investigations and scientific discovery.
In Maths we are continuing with our fraction unit and have been comparing fractions by looking at the denominators and also the numerators.
As it was Remembrance day on Tuesday, we have been delving into Michael Morpurgo’s book “Poppy Field” which has provoked a lot of thoughtful discussion.
We are beginning to look at our chocolate project in Humanities and will be exploring the chocolate trade and planning our sustainable chocolate products in DT.

In another exciting and productive week, here’s a snap short of what we’ve been up to in class:
In Science this week we explored the benefits of exercise on the heart including how exercise can boost energy levels and support overall wellbeing. The classes enjoyed thinking about ways to build healthy habits into daily routines.
In English, we began creating characters for a Maya myth. The children practised using descriptive language to bring their characters to life, thinking about how appearance, personality and actions contribute to a character’s role in a story.
Our Humanities lessons focused on the achievements of the Maya civilisation. We analysed what these achievements reveal about Maya society and discussed how they compare to other ancient civilisations we have studied.
In Maths, we revisited methods of short and long division. The children practised setting out their calculations clearly and checking their answers using multiplication.
In PSHE we are continuing with our daily check-ins and zones of regulation.
Thank you to all the parents who have already paid for the Year 6 residential. If you haven’t managed to do so, please could you complete the payment as soon as possible.
Homework will be set on Sunday and will be due on the following Sunday.
Reading is expected to be completed daily and all students have the opportunity to change their books regularly. PO’s should be completed and signed daily so that the children have a reading record.
Spellings: These will be taught during the week and shared on the Google Classroom. Please encourage your child to practise these daily. Some tasks will be completed in Homework books as specified by the class teacher.

It has been another action packed week in Year 6! Our learners have been diving into fascinating topics across the curriculum - from ancient civilisations to the science of the human body. Here’s a glimpse of what they’ve been up to:
This week in Science, we have been investigating the impact of exercise on the heart. After predicting what might happen to heart rate during physical activity, they carried out practical experiments, collecting data and analysing results. The class were amazed to see how quickly the heart responds to even a short burst of exercise. Budding scientists are already making links to fitness and wellbeing.
We’ve travelled back in time to discover the chronology of the Maya civilisation. Pupils pieced together key events, placing them on a timeline to understand how the Maya fit into the wider story of world history. From ancient cities to cultural achievements, Year 6 have been asking excellent questions about this remarkable civilisation.
Our focus in Maths this week has been on multiplication and division strategies. The children have been tackling tricky problems with increasing confidence, exploring both mental and written methods. They’re developing flexibility in their number work, choosing the most efficient strategy for the task.
Linking to our Humanities topic, our English lessons have been enriched by the myths and folktales of the Maya people. Children have been reading, retelling, and acting out these traditional stories. Inspired by these tales, they are beginning to craft their own imaginative narratives, blending history with creativity.
We are continuing with our Haida Art work and the Zones of regulation in PSHE.
Thank you to all those parents who have signed up their children for the Year 6 residential. A gentle reminder that the deadline for the payment is the end of this week as we have to put the deposit down for the camp and pay for the buses.
This week we are looking at words with irregular spelling patterns.
Maths: These details are shared in google classroom and the children have their login details in their POs - MyMaths.
Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division B
White Rose maths - square and cubed numbers
This year seems to be flying past and it is great to see Year 6 interested in and applying for the various leadership roles on offer this year.
We have had great fun in Science this week making a model of the blood out of cereals and mini marshmallows - a bit gruesome but memorable!
In Maths, we are continuing our unit on addition and subtraction and multiplication and division, taking a closer look at squared and cubed numbers.
In English we are starting to explore some ancient myths from the Maya people through a variety of drama techniques and dramatic expressions.
The formline Haida art is beginning to take shape with the children rising to the challenge of choosing a suitable, traditional animal shape that they will be carving into lino in the coming weeks.
We continue to work on our understanding of the four zones of regulation in PSHE and how to implement them in our daily lives.
A gentle reminder to complete the google form for the Year 6 residential camp in Sifah in November. This must be completed before the end of this week (25/09/25). If you have not already done so click here for a link to the form.

Welcome to another exciting week of Year 6!
This week we have begun our humanities topic for the term - The Maya and chocolate! We have started by looking at mapping skills and the geography of the Americas. In Science we have had fun looking at the human circulatory system and we will be extending this learning over the coming weeks to a greater understanding of how the heart and blood vessels work.
Our English topic is based on non- chronological report writing where we will be using our scientific knowledge and vocabulary to write a report based on the human circulatory system. In Maths, we are revisiting place value, making links to previous learning and using our knowledge of numbers to solve problems with greater values. It was fantastic to see so many children taking part in the TT rockstars battle of the classes last week!
The children have drawn some amazing scientific sketches of the heart in art as well as now creating abstract heart drawings - it is lovely to see such creative ideas.
PSHE sees us continuing to look at e-safety.

For those of you who were unable to attend we will soon share the presentations together with the Year 6 Camp presentation and google form.
The children have worked really hard this week, writing a letter to their future selves. It will be fun to see them open it at the end of Year 6 and to reflect on their learning journey and growth over the year. Maths groups have commenced and we have been consolidating and reviewing previous knowledge of place value. We have also seen some amazing art work, first with their “My Islands” project and also with their careful scientific drawing of the heart.
In PSHE and computing we have been looking at online safety. Instrumental lessons also begin this week and the Library is now open!
Homework this week is to take part in a TT rockstars tournament competing against all the other classes. There is a cap of 45 minutes over the week that each child can partake in the tournament and the hours of play are between 3:30pm and 7:00pm. This tournament will close on Saturday.
Continue to Read each day - this can include ReadTheory.
Homework will be set every Sunday and is due the following Sunday.
Please ensure all personal items like water bottles, PE kit and hats are labelled clearly.
The U11 BSME Games will be held in Muscat in February 2026. If your child is interested in taking part, please join us for this information session next week, on Thursday 11 September, 2:30 - 3 pm, in the Oryx Theatre. Please meet Mr O'Sullivan in the Main Reception.

We are delighted to welcome everyone to the start of a new school year in Year 6. This is an exciting and important year, and we look forward to the learning, challenges, and opportunities that lie ahead.
A special welcome is extended to the new children and families who are joining the BSM community for the first time. We are very pleased you are here and look forward to getting to know you and working closely with you throughout the year. Also welcome back to our returning families -we are so looking forward to continuing this journey with you.
During the first week, we have been taking part in a range of “getting to know you” and problem solving activities, designed to help us build strong relationships, establish a positive classroom community and ensure that every child feels supported and valued. It has been wonderful to watch the children settle quickly into Year 6 and begin to prepare for their final year in the Primary school.
We have also started our important work on online safety, continuing to help the children to understand how to use technology responsibly and confidently.
Reading - Please read for 20 minutes per day and record this in your P.O. Please record the book title and page numbers and ask an adult to sign.
